Cool season, perennial bunchgrass, sometimes producing short rhizomes. Adapted to wet, poorly drained sites, and it is tolerant of acidic and salty soils. Nutritious and palatable, it is useful for irrigated pastures and range improvement at higher elevations or wet sites.
